Immediately after taking over Saigon, the French built a church to serve as a place of worship for Catholics of Vien Chinh. The church was built on the 5 street, on the side of a small Vietnamese pagoda that had been abandoned .In addition to the purpose of worshiping, the construction of the cathedral also serves the purpose of showing Catholicism and the greatness of French civilization to colonial people.
Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most unique architectural works in Saigon, always attracting the attention of domestic and foreign tourists. The cathedral has a perimeter of 91 x 35.5 m, a height of 21 m. There are no fenced walls around. The church’s foundation is specially designed to withstand 10 times the load of the entire church architecture above. From the outside, from the wall to the roof is a fresh red brick, without any moss. Currently in the church there are some broken tiles, above with the words Guichard Carvin, Marseille St André France (maybe this place produces this type of tile), some other pieces of tile have the words Wang – Tai Saigon. Maybe this is a piece of tile that was produced later in Saigon to replace broken tiles during the Second World War( the time when Father Vuong Si Tuan (Assistant of Father Huynh Cong Minh)).
This is a real architectural work with great value in terms of history and architectural art. Is a living testimony to a historical period of Vietnam. Although the Notre Dame Cathedral has lived for over a hundred years, it still exists today as a living relic to testify to the country’s religious beliefs. Foreign and domestic visitors all come here to visit, especially on Christmas Eve, the church and the city center turn into a jubilant festival area, one of the most unique architectural structures. One of the most unique architecture in Saigon, always attract the attention of foreign tourists.
